However, a team of Finnish scientists have now successfully produced ‘coffee’ in a lab. The process uses plant cell cultures and places them in a bioreactor to create a biomass which is then roasted and turned into the new coffee drink. The resulting drink reportedly smells and tastes similar to conventional coffee. With the impact of climate change, the research team says that lab-grown coffee has several benefits. There will be less use of pesticides, fertilizer, and transport and less deforestation will be needed for farms to meet growing demand.
